What is Metronet?

Metronet is Infocom's broadband Internet access and High-Speed-Data-Network (HSDN) service, based on Wireless Local Loop (WLL), using Breezecom wireless radio technology.

Breezecom is one of the leading companies in the world producing and developing wireless radio technology with superior equipment performance and reliability. This also ensures minimal interference within the allocated frequency spectrum of the ISM band (2.4GHz), which is assigned by the UCC (Uganda Communications Commission) for this type of communication and for which Infocom is a license holder.

As a Metronet subscriber you will connect to Infocom through one of the several high sites we have setup within Kampala and upcountry, via the radio modem and directional antenna our engineers install at your premises. This connectivity will give you 24hrs / 7days a week access to the Internet with no phone line or resultant cost: instantly and permanently online.

You will also have a fixed IP address allocated with your Metronet connection which can be utilized for a number of additional Internet services such as your own mail server in relation with your own domain name if you wish (Infocom can host your domain name and also register it for you provided it is still available. Please contact our sales department on 562800 and our staff will be happy to assist you with all relevant questions in this respect). Also your own web site can be related to this fixed IP address and domain name, and can be a base link for a Virtual Private Network setup (VPN), meaning a wide area network with other affiliated offices of your company permanently linked together via the Internet or local Metronet, for high-speed data exchange and connectivity. Please contact our sales staff to answer all your questions in this respect and to advise you of the advantages and our latest technology.

Types of Service

In terms of available Metronet services we distinguish between two different categories:

For a standard Metronet connection it is important to note that this is NOT a shared bandwidth as such, but a managed bandwidth. This is a very important distinction. Infocom is currently Uganda's only ISP providing a sophisticated bandwidth management system which ensures not only even distribution of bandwidth among all users but based on fine tuned access rules and algorithms, it guarantees a minimum bandwidth to all users and avails in a prioritized way additional (burst) bandwidth currently not allocated. This means for a standard Metronet connection that your speed to Infocom is usually not less then 64/64k but can be up to 4 times this standard speed.

For a dedicated bandwidth connection with minimum guaranteed speed based on a Service Level Agreement, please get in touch with our customer care department to discuss your needs. Whatever your demands are, we can provide you with the very best and scalable connectivity solution which allows you to grow with your future requirements.

Infocom's Metronet SLA provides commitments in three key areas:

Bandwidth and Speed Issues

Please note: Any Internet service provider can only control and guarantee speed up to the access point into the global Internet backbone. The Internet itself is a dynamic and rather volatile infrastructure, which administers itself and adapts to variations with no single organization or institution having control over it. Once your data packets (that means the information you are transmitting or receiving), are in the Internet, you are limited or regulated by global Internet traffic rules and routing regulations of the Internet at this very moment and NOT by limitations of the ISP or Infocom for that matter.

Another very important factor influencing the “feel” of speed of your Internet connection is the number of computers on your office LAN or corporate network, concurrently accessing the Internet. Depending on your usage profile of course, but as a general guideline, we recommend a maximum of 8 to 10 computers for a standard Metronet connection. For heavy or commercial users (i.e. Cybercafes) a maximum of 5 computers is recommended.

Online Account Information

Metronet account information is one of Infocom's online value added services that enables you have access to a full featured graphical display for real-time monitoring of link utilization your Metronet connection; putting you in total control of your connection. Our customer care department (562800 or customercare@infocom.co.ug) will provide you with your access ID and password.

If you have already got your access ID and password and would like to check out the traffic and bandwidth information related to your Metronet account, please follow this link.

Security Issues

Another often overlooked but very important issue is your protection against virus or intrusion attacks from the Internet as well as open relays if you are running your own mail server with our domain name. Needless to repeat and quote the thousands of documents and advice published in this respect. Even though we are providing network address translation to our Metronet clients, which gives a certain degree of intrusion protection (but not virus protection!) we urge you to install and permanently update an adequate antivirus program on your server and workstations to avoid expensive data loss.

If you are running your own mail server you will be able to relay your messages through Infocom's high performance mail servers for a quick dispatch of your mail to the Internet. Your systems or network administrator needs to make sure however that your mail server (MDaemon, M/S Exchange or others if you run Linux OS for example) is configured properly and necessary security measures are in place i.e. no open mail relay which will be exploited by hackers for spamming. This is a very critical issue since the fixed Metronet IP address allocated to your mail server is from our class-C address block and you risk your domain being banned by Internet security agencies if your mail server is virus infected and is subsequently performing a port scan of Internet servers in the attempt to infect others or if an open mail relay was exploited by spam mail.

In this case we have to adhere to the strict Internet ethics and shut such a connection down until the problem is solved. This is a requirement all ISPs need to follow and we trust in your understanding and co-operation. In any case we will notify you if this has happened and if it is related to your IP address. Again our team of support technicians is at hand should you require any assistance to solve such problems.
